Translating research into action

Dr Siana Nkya was awarded an AfOx Visiting Fellowship in 2019 to work with Prof Anna Schuh at Department of Oncology at the University of Oxford. There collaborative research has led to the formation of a social enterprise SEREN that provides affordable diagnostic tests for newborn babies in Tanzania.

The AfOx Fellowship had a dual benefit. Not only did it give me access to resources and equipment that were then lacking at my home lab, but it also made me think of the social aspect of the diagnostic test. For the first time in my career as a scientist, I thought, how can we create an innovation that will actually work in the community?
