Kevin Marsh wins $1M Al-Sumait Prize
Professor Kevin Marsh has been awarded the prestigious Abdulrahman Al-Sumait Prize for African Development in the health category. The award, a $1M cash prize, recognises Prof Kevin Marsh’s three decades of work to improve the health of children in Africa. His research focuses on the immune epidemiology of malaria, a disease that affects the health of millions of African children every year. Prof Marsh is a principal investigator at the KEMRI-Wellcome Research Programme in Kenya, having previously been the director of the programme between 1989 and 2014. He is also a senior adviser to the African Academy of Sciences. He recently founded the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx), a platform for promoting equitable academic and research collaborations between the University of Oxford and African researchers and institutions. Prof Marsh has since donated the entire amount to support research in Africa – with $400,000 going to the African Academy of Sciences, and $600,000 to support AfOx.
