Research
The focus of my research is Environmental Archaeology. My area of specialty is archaeobotany during the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. In the last 13 years, I have been conducting research on Climate/Environment change and human adaptation, understanding change and continuity in the past environmental record, reconstruction of vegetation history and reconstruction of ancient food systems. The geographic focus of my study is The Horn and the Nile Valley of Northeast Africa.

Alem was an AfOx-Collaborative Fellow in 2019.
During his 8 week AfOx fellowship in 2019, Alem was hosted by the School of Archaeology and St Hugh's College.
