Dr Carolyn Chisadza

Carolyn Chisadza is an economist and researcher who specialises in studying the frictions that exist within societies. Dr Chisadza is currently an AfOx Visiting Fellow at the Department of Economics, University of Oxford, as part of the Africa Oxford Visiting Fellowship Programme

Dr Chisadza is a senior lecturer in economics at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where she teaches microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic growth, and economic development. She holds a PhD in economics from the University of Pretoria and has been awarded the Stella Nkomo Award for Best Doctoral Thesis and the 2020 J.J.I Middleton medal for the best first article published in the South African Journal of Economics.

Her research focuses on development issues related to inequality, conflict, and the quality of institutions (including gender, ethnic, democratic, and historical factors) within Africa. Her research papers have been published in top academic journals and peer-reviewed edited books. Carolyn has also refereed for top academic journals and served as a guest editor for Sustainability’s Special Issue on 'Environment, Climate, and Sustainable Economic Development'.

During her time in Oxford, her project will focus on conflict, peacekeeping, and sexual violence. She aims to investigate the persistence of sexual violence during armed conflict and contribute to the dialogue surrounding this issue. Her study will also contribute to the discussion on the effectiveness of peacekeeping interventions in conflict countries, highlighting the possibility that those expected to protect the victims can also be perpetrators of violence.
