As a medical doctor with a long-standing fascination with the intricacies and mysteries of conception and the desire to help those who struggle to conceive, I sought to delve deeper into the behind pregnancy and the transformation of two unique cells into the blueprint for an entirely new individual. Supported by the AfOx Graduate scholarship, I embarked on an academic journey to the University of Oxford to study the MSc in Clinical Embryology. I dove into the vibrant world of Oxford – a childhood dream of mine, ready to be challenged, educated, and transformed.

My experience in the MSc program has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with exhilarating highs, challenging lows, and transformative experiences. I am discovering the incredible science underlying fertilisation, implantation, and the fascinating sequence of events that result in the transformation of one cell into a whole human. I am also learning why the ‘natural’ process of conception might not happen for some and the innovative techniques that could be used to help achieve pregnancy.

I have acquired research experience, laboratory proficiency, and the ability to communicate my thoughts clearly in writing and verbal presentations. I am currently working on identifying and understanding factors involved in the migration of cells and what makes them acquire their unique shapes during the embryologic period.

I have to admit that this journey has been intense, overwhelming, and even scary at times, but it has been equally exciting and rewarding.

Adjusting to life in a foreign land has not been without its challenges. As someone who is coming from a tropical country, the weather, ranging from sub-zero temperatures to fickle spring days, has been a significant change for me. The short winter days and lack of sunlight took some getting used to and impacted my mood and emotional well-being negatively. However, as spring arrived and the days grew longer, my spirits lifted and I found solace in the warm embrace of the sun while appreciating and navigating the quirks of my new environment.

Oxford, a city steeped in history, has been a breath-taking backdrop to my journey. Its centuries-old architectural marvels coexist harmoniously with ultra-modern innovations and conveniences, creating a charming balance between old and new. The university's delightful traditions, such as formal dinners, sub fusc, matriculations, and dressing up for exams, have added a touch of allure to my experience.

Immersed in an environment where brilliance is commonplace, and everyone is well-read, well-spoken, and holds world-changing ambitions. I have had to repeatedly battle my unwelcome sidekick - impostor syndrome. However, by taking a step back and reflecting on my journey, I have learned to appreciate my unique perspectives, lived experiences, and knowledge. By focusing on what makes me who I am, I can contribute to the diverse tapestry of intellect and ambition that defines this prestigious institution while learning from the extraordinary individuals I come across.

Months into my Oxford journey, I have grown and evolved in ways I never imagined and I can say with certainty that I am not the same person that arrived here in October 2022. My biggest lesson so far has been to "do it scared".  Through the challenges and the triumphs and embracing the uncertainties of my Oxford experience, I have grown not only academically but also personally, discovering new strengths, and developing resilience in the face of adversity. As I continue my studies and forge my path in the world, I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences Oxford and AfOx have provided, knowing that they have shaped me into a better version of myself.

The AfOx scholarship has provided me with more than just financial support; it has given me a sense of belonging in a foreign land by fostering a community of support and camaraderie amongst the scholars – past and present and program staff. As a socially anxious introvert, the AfOx community has been a godsend, easing my transition into a new environment, and providing a buffer against the challenges of culture shock and homesickness. The AfOx community has exposed me to brilliant minds from across the continent, with diverse accomplishments and innovative ideas to move our world forward. I have also been introduced to various fields outside of my speciality such as leadership, socioeconomic concepts, and storytelling, thus broadening my horizons, enriching my education, and inspiring me to envision how we can move the continent forward.
