Dawit Gebrehiwet Weldemariam

Dawit Gebrehiwet Weldemariam is pursuing an MSc in Translational Health Sciences at the University of Oxford as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar and a member of Linacre College.

He is a pharmacist and clinical researcher from Eritrea with experience across academia, hospital leadership, and community practice. After graduating with high academic distinction with a Bachelor in Pharmacy, he began his journey as a Graduate Assistant in Pharmacology at the Asmara College of Health Sciences, teaching pharmacology to 60 students annually.

While working at Hazhaz Hospital, Dawit focused on strengthening pharmacy services and clinical practice. His work led to a nomination by the National Medicine and Food Administration to serve as a Zonal Trainer for the Pharmacovigilance department. Alongside this regulatory role, he co-founded the hospital’s frontline COVID-19 response team, established a new inpatient pharmacy department to stabilise medical supplies, and trained over 40 healthcare professionals on the rational use of antimicrobials and updated infection protocols.

As a researcher, Dawit has published 11 original articles in peer-reviewed journals and serves as a guest peer-reviewer. He also supports professional advancement by serving on the Board of Directors of both the Eritrean Pharmacists Connection and the Eritrean Pharmaceutical Association.

At Oxford, Dawit intends to focus on the practical application of clinical research to health policy. He is eager to collaborate with the AfOx community and acquire advanced translational tools to advocate for equitable public health strategies, bridge the gap between evidence and systemic decision-making, and drive diverse, high-impact healthcare policy improvements back home.
