Olanya Samuel is a Mastercard Foundation Scholar pursuing an MSc in Clinical Embryology at the University of Oxford and is a member of Green Templeton College.

Born in Northern Uganda during the LRA insurgency, Olanya grew up witnessing how conflict disrupts both education and healthcare access. The intervention of organisations such as the International Rescue Committee in providing health services to displaced populations proved to be a turning point, inspiring him to pursue a career in medicine.

He graduated top of his class with a degree in Medicine and developed a strong interest in Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2017, his commitment to excellence and public health was recognised when he placed second out of 1,500 participants in a national competition on Mechanisms of Antimicrobial Resistance, organised by Healthlink Initiatives and the Ministry of Health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he completed advanced response training through Stanford University, placing in the top 2% of the cohort. This distinction led to his appointment as Coordinator of the District COVID-19 Response Team.

As Facility In-Charge at ABASA Medical Centre, Olanya has spearheaded the management of complex cases, including endometriosis, infertility, and cervical cancer, through strategic partnerships with Reproductive Health Uganda and Marie Stopes. These experiences cemented his passion for clinical embryology.

At Oxford, Olanya aims to advance his expertise in Assisted Reproductive Technology, with a focus on AI integration in embryo selection and Phospholipase C Zeta assays. His ultimate goal is to champion the development of ethical, regulated, and affordable fertility services across Africa.
