MSc Archaeology, Wadham College

Kenya

Syokau is an Archaeologist with an interest in the decolonisation of archaeology. She studied for a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

Syokau was working at Book Bunk Trust as an archaeologist. Her work involved creating the first digital catalogue of the library’s collection, creating an alternative library classification system that centres on female and African voices, and exploring historical documentation through storytelling.

Syokau will be studying the MSc in Archaeology at the University of Oxford. After Oxford, she hopes to work in the cultural heritage sector. She believes there is an imminent need for more African voices in this subject field from the policy level to practice in ways which reduce inequalities, create sustainable cities and communities and foster vibrant partnerships that allow for sustainable developmental change.
