Matilda Akayesi

Mastercard Foundation scholar

Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL), Wolfson College

Ghana

Matilda is taking the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at Oxford. Before joining Oxford, Matilda studied for a Bachelor of Laws degree at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology before qualifying from the Ghana School of Law as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Matilda’s interests lie at the intersection of the legal and healthcare industries. She has pursued these interests as a research assistant on a cross-jurisdictional Wellcome Trust-funded project that investigated the regulation of traditional and alternative medicines in six countries across Europe and Africa. Before this, she conducted research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Ghana’s 2020 general elections. Matilda has gained practical experience through legal internships, student leadership positions and volunteer work.

Through the BCL programme at Oxford, Matilda intends to strengthen her understanding of how law can be used to improve and protect public health. She plans to investigate how African states can leverage medical technologies to achieve and accelerate universal health coverage through improved regulation.
