Akinmade Akande

Dr. Akinmade Timothy Akande, Professor of English Language at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), got his Ph.D. in English Language from the University of Leeds, UK in 2008. His PhD was fully funded by Overseas Research Student fellowship and Tetley and Lupton scholarship. Dr. Akande has published in many reputable national and international outlets. One of his latest publications is titled “English-based West African pidgin and creole varieties” which appears in The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of World Englishes edited by Kingsley Bolton (2025).

Dr Akande is the lead editor of Current Trends in Nigerian Pidgin English published by Mouton de Gruyter in 2021 and the Editor-in-Chief of Naija Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages. He is a fellow of the prestigious Nigerian Academy of Letters, Alexander von Humboldt and American Council of Learned Societies. Dr. Akande is a reviewer for a number of journals including Language Matters.

He was the Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the 2016 English Studies Association of Nigeria. He also served as the Deputy Provost for Postgraduate College at OAU between June 1st, 2021 and May 30th, 2022. Most of his papers focus on sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and Pidgin and Creoles.
