Chijioke Ucheakonam

Chijioke Ucheakonam is a Nigerian-qualified lawyer pursuing an MSc in Law and Finance at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford. He is a Mastercard Foundation Scholar and a member of Wolfson College. His work centres on mergers and acquisitions and the use of legal and financial frameworks to foster business growth, catalyse sustainable investment, and strengthen private sector development across Africa.

He graduated with a First Class LL.B. from Obafemi Awolowo University, where he emerged as the Best Graduating Student and received twelve academic prizes in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement. He also represented the University in international moot court competitions, including the Philip C. Jessup. He was subsequently called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Before joining Oxford, Chijioke practised at one of Nigeria's tier-one law firms, where he advised on high-value domestic and cross-border transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, project finance, corporate restructurings, and other complex commercial matters across a range of industries.

At Oxford, Chijioke is eager to engage with scholars and practitioners at the forefront of global finance and sustainable development. He hopes to deepen his expertise in corporate finance and transactional law while exploring how mergers and acquisitions and innovative financing structures can unlock investment in renewable energy and other climate-resilient sectors across Africa. In the long term, he aspires to help mobilise private capital for sustainable infrastructure and support the growth of resilient businesses that drive inclusive and sustainable economic development across the continent.
