Lydia Maru

Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research

Lydia J. Maru’s journey in research began with a simple but powerful belief: that science, when guided by compassion and integrity, can change lives. From her early days as a nurse in Kenya to her current work in clinical research, she has witnessed firsthand how well-conducted studies can bring hope, knowledge, and solutions to communities often left behind.

She is currently part of the KEMRI–Wellcome Trust Research Programme (CGMRC) in Kilifi, where she is actively involved in clinical trials, ensuring that study protocols are developed and implemented ethically and in alignment with regulatory standards. As a Clinical Study Monitor, and with a BSc in Nursing from Pwani University, she has previously worked as a Research Nurse and Study Coordinator across various clinical trial settings. Her career continues to build on these experiences, strengthening her commitment to ensuring that research in the Global South produces solutions that are both relevant and transformative.

Pursuing the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Research, she aims to deepen her understanding of research ethics, quality systems, and health equity. Every trial she supports reminds her that behind every data point lies a person, a family, and a story — and it is these stories that continue to fuel her purpose and passion in global health research.
