The Africa Oxford Initiative recently welcomed it’s a newest cohort of outstanding graduate scholars from across Africa to the University of Oxford. This 6th intake marks one of the largest groups to date, with over 80 scholars arriving in Oxford to begin their master’s degree studies. An additional 11 scholars will be pursuing Postgraduate Diplomas in Global Health Research.

The AfOx graduate scholarships programme, continues to grow as a flagship opportunity for exceptional African graduates to pursue fully funded master’s degrees at Oxford. In addition to covering tuition and living expenses, the programme provides leadership development, networking opportunities, and tailored support before, during and after the scholars’ time at the University. A unique feature of the scholarships programme is Ubuntu Transitions, which provides career support and placement for all African graduate scholars in African institutions post-Oxford.

At the orientation session, Sepiso Dean Mwamelo, AfOx Scholarships Programme Manager, said, “Each year, we welcome exceptional students from across the continent who are deeply passionate about and committed to Africa’s development. Through our programme, we aim to continue honing our scholars’ leadership capacity, equipping them with the skills, networks, and confidence to drive meaningful change. We look forward to supporting their journeys as they shape a more inclusive and prosperous future for the continent.”

Their studies reflect AfOx’s vision of advancing solutions for Healthy People, Green Futures, Integrated Societies, and Innovation for Prosperity globally.

The opportunity has been transformational. Yengi Emmanuel Daro Justine an alumnus and 2023/24 Mastercard Foundation Scholar reflects, “ This programme transformed my path- supporting my master’s degree at Oxford, research publications and leadership roles, enabling me to build lasting network. These now guide my work at the world bank advancing resilient, inclusive development."

Since its inception the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has supported over 150 scholars from across the continent, and this number continues to grow. Additional graduate scholarships have been made possible in partnership with the Oppenheimer Fund and Kennedy Institute. AfOx aims to support more than 400 African graduates in Oxford by 2030 through successful partnerships and collaboration.
